Christopher McQuarrie Reportedly Wants Henry Cavill & Alec Baldwin Back For 'M:I' Sequels (Kind Of)

If you’re a fan of spy thrillers, and just high-quality action films in general, you’re probably psyched by the news that filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie is coming back for two new “Mission: Impossible” sequels. And if you’re a fan of government lackeys, as well as men with reloading arms and controversial mustaches, then you will really love this next bit of ‘M:I’ news.

According to THR, McQuarrie is not only interested in bringing back the government guy character played by Alec Baldwin, but also Henry Cavill’s August Walker. Albeit, these guys will only show up as flashbacks, due to obvious circumstances.

That being said, we’re here for anything involving Cavill (and okay, sure, Baldwin too) coming back to the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise after ‘Fallout.’ It’s clear that Cruise and Cavill were great together, and the bathroom brawl scene from that film is going to be regarded as one of the most iconic fight scenes in the last decade. So, we’ll be interested to see what McQuarrie has up his sleeve for future installments.

Unlike other directors in the franchise, McQuarrie has been creating true sequels for his ‘Impossible’ films. Carrying over storylines and characters (outside of the core team) from ‘Rogue Nation’ to ‘Fallout,’ it’s obvious that the filmmaker is truly interested in making the spy franchise sequels more serialized than what has come before. And considering his two films, ‘Rogue Nation’ and ‘Fallout,’ are often regarded as the best of the bunch, that’s fine by us.

We’ll hear more about the casting for these two new films in the coming months, as production is going to probably ramp up sooner than later. McQuarrie is said to be filming the two sequels essentially back-to-back, leading to a schedule akin to what the Russos did with the most recent “Avengers” films. This means the filmmaker, Tom Cruise, and the rest of the IMF are in for months and months of production.

The two films are scheduled for summer 2021 and 2022, respectively.
