Matthew McConaughey Being Eyed To Star In Park Chan-Wook's Ultra-Violent Western From 'Bone Tomahawk' Writer

The pairing of Park Chan-wook and Matthew McConaughey sounds too weird, but at the same time incredible, to pass up, right? One is the acclaimed director from South Korea, who has amazed fans with works like “Oldboy,” “The Handmaiden,” and most recently, his TV series “The Little Drummer Girl.” And the other is an Oscar-winning actor that continues to take interesting roles, albeit with his Southern charm positioned front and center. And according to Collider, both men are likely teaming up for a new Amazon film, “The Brigands of Rattlecreek.”

Now, if you wanted to add just a little more flavor to this film, why not base it on a script from S. Craig Zahler? That’s right, the filmmaker behind recent cult favorites, “Bone Tomahawk” and “Brawl in Cell Block 99” penned the script that serves as the basis for Park’s next film. ‘Rattlecreek’ tells the story of a sheriff and a doctor that seek revenge on a group of outlaws that terrorize a small Old West town during a terrible storm. According to the report, McConaughey is sought for the role of the doctor, while another A-lister will occupy the sheriff role.

Judging by Park Chan-wook’s filmography and the writing style of Zahler, it’s not crazy to expect that ‘Rattlecreek’ will have some very violent situations. The report claims that the violence of the script is one of the reasons that it has languished in development hell since being part of the Black List in 2006.

As mentioned, if McConaughey signs on, ‘Rattlecreek’ will just be yet another interesting role for the actor, who won an Oscar for his part in “The Dallas Buyer’s Club.” Since his Oscar win, the actor has starred in films like “White Boy Rick,” “The Dark Tower,” and most recently, “The Beach Bum.” Those three films couldn’t be further apart from each other in tone, budget, and plot. So why not add an ultra-violent Western to the mix?
