The day in the life of a hapless, young medical transport van driver in Milwaukee doesn’t necessarily sound like the makings of a great comedy. However, in director Kirill Mikhanovsky’s “Give Me Liberty,” the life of young Vic is fodder for not only some truly hilarious comedic moments but also a quick glimpse at the social issues that affect the country today.
As seen in the first trailer for the film, there’s a lot going on during this hectic day for young Vic. Not only does he have to do his job as a driver of a medical transport van, and help citizens of Milwaukee get to where they need to be, but he’s also seemingly forced into helping his Russian grandfather (and his group of elderly friends) attend a funeral. Somehow, in “Give Me Liberty,” Vic manages to do both, but not without some funny moments along the way.
“Give Me Liberty” was chosen to screen at this year’s Sundance, Cannes, and BAMcinemaFest, where it was the centerpiece selection. We saw the comedy at this year’s Sundance and praised the film. In our review, we said, “As Vic chauffeurs, these individuals through a racially divided city—Mikhanovsky delivers a profound statement that celebrates the connective tissue of humanity with honesty, sensitivity and an endearing heart.”
The film stars Lauren “Lolo” Spencer, Chris Galust, Maksim Stoyanov, and Darya Ekamasova. “Give Me Liberty” is directed by Kirill Mikhanovsky, who also co-wrote the film with Alice Austen.
“Give Me Liberty” will debut in select cities on August 23.
Here’s the synopsis:
