Marvel Boss Kevin Feige Confirms An 'Eternals' Hero Will Be Openly Gay & Teases Big Plans For Kit Harington's Character

Of all the films and Disney+ TV projects that Marvel Studios has announced over the last couple of months, it’s hard to argue with anyone that says “Eternals” might be the most exciting. The studio has so far shined greatest when taking unfamiliar heroes and molding them into household names, with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films being prime examples. But with “Eternals,” it’s not just the unknown that’s exciting, but also the diversity and inclusivity that is coming along with this highly-anticipated film.

Speaking to Good Morning America, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the cast of the film talked about the diversity of the film, as well as how “Eternals” will be the film to feature the first major openly gay superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While Feige wouldn’t reveal, just yet, who the character is from the cast, he does explain that the character is going to be defined by more than just his sexuality.

“He’s married. He’s got a family. And that is just part of who he is,” said the producer.

With actors like Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Bryan Tyree Henry, Don Lee, and Barry Keoghan leading the way as the male characters in “Eternals,” it would stand to reason that one of them is playing the part that is being alluded to. Previous speculation and rumors pointed to the character Ikaris (played by Madden) as being the openly gay character, but we have yet to have that confirmed. So, it would appear that we’ll find out at a later date.

One of the male actors listed above, Harington, has been signed to play Dane Whitman, aka the Black Knight, in the film. But for Feige, there’s the chance that the “Game of Thrones” actor sees his role expand outside of the “Eternals” brand and into another franchise.

“We were so happy when [Harington] agreed to join. And it is a part that could perhaps grow into something else in the future,” teased Feige.

Fans of the comics know that Black Knight has a fairly long history as an Avenger, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see Harington reprise his role down the line in a future team-up film if ‘Eternals’ is successful and fans respond to his character. At this point, that’s pretty much a slam dunk, right?

“Eternals” is set to arrive in theaters on November 6, 2020.
