Kristen Stewart can do anything. Look no further than her current lineup of films: in “Seberg,” a Civil Right drama that recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival she plays French New Wave actress Jean Seberg. In “Underwater,” an upcoming aquatic horror film to be released on January 10, 2020, she plays a scientist trapped in an unwater facility. Finally, in “Charlie’s Angels,” she plays the thrill-seeking member of these private detectives. This is a lineup that would spell success for any rising star, and for Stewart, it amounts to a vacation from some of the heavy, character-driven dramas she’s tackled over the past two years.
But one thing you won’t find on her upcoming resume? A Marvel movie. As we covered earlier this month, Stewart admitted to Harper’s Bazaar that some people within the industry have pointed to her sexuality as detrimental to her career. “I have fully been told, ‘If you just like do yourself a favour, and don’t go out holding your girlfriend’s hand in public, you might get a Marvel movie,’” she said. While it should be surprising to hear homophobic language like this in 2019, what’s more surprising is the idea that Stewart needs a Marvel move to validate her success. Even ignoring her early summer movie pedigree, Stewart already moves effortlessly between arthouse cinema and event films like “Charlie’s Angels”; she has nothing to prove to anyone, least of all those who would ask her to tone down her sexuality for the chance to play, I don’t know, the third version of Jean Grey.

And when asked at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend about her comments to Harper’s Bazaar, Stewart doubled down. “That’s been a conversation that’s always existed,” Stewart told Variety. “I’ve always radically rejected it. It’s nice to be able to talk about that in a way that people really understand now.” When asked what kind of superhero she would like to play, Stewart kept it simple. “A gay one!” Her co-star Anthony Mackie agreed. “I think [Stewart] should be the gay female Falcon Captain America.” So there it is – Kristen Stewart can play anything. She just won’t play your Marvel superhero unless you make her a gay female Falcon Captain America.
