Does the world need another adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, “A Christmas Carol?” After roughly 4,225 films based on the story of Scrooge and the various ghosts that haunt him, is there anything left to say? Well, when you add the talents of Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, combined with the promise of it being a musical, then you have a reason that could be worth revisiting the tale.
According to THR, Sean Anders and John Morris, the duo behind the comedies “Instant Family” and “Daddy’s Home (1 & 2)” are set to write and direct the upcoming “A Christmas Carol” adaptation starring none other than Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. The film is said to be a “musical reimagining” of the classic story featuring Ebenezer Scrooge being visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, showing the grump the error of his ways. Despite having Ferrell and Reynolds attached, we still don’t know what roles they play in the film, as those details are being kept under wraps.
This isn’t the first time that Ferrell has worked with Anders and Morris. As mentioned, the filmmakers are behind the “Daddy’s Home” franchise, which was a huge moneymaker for Ferrell, who starred opposite Mark Wahlberg. And despite being known primarily for his superhero and action films, as of late, Reynolds is no stranger to comedies and even Christmas comedies. Who can forget the lovable actor donning a fat suit in the cringe-worthy comedy “Just Friends” back in 2005?
Ferrell will next be seen in the upcoming film “Downhill,” starring opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfuss. Reynolds has a busy schedule up ahead with films like “Six Underground,” “The Hitman’s Bodyguard’s Wife,” and “Free Guy” all on the upcoming slate. No studio has signed on to partner for the film, but you have to imagine that’ll be happening any day now.
