Forget 'Lois & Clark,' CW Is Developing A 'Superman & Lois' Series Spinning Off From 'Supergirl'

With Earth-2 and the various other multiverses at play in the CW Arrowverse, it only makes sense that somehow in 2019, “Supergirl” is going to have a “Superman” spin-off series. Normally, it would be the other way around, considering good ol’ Supes is the beginning of the modern superhero. But hey, in CW’s world, Superman is second fiddle. But not for long.

According to THR, CW is working on a “Superman & Lois” series that will star Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch, respectively, and will spin-off from their recent roles as guest stars in “Supergirl.” And based on the description of the show, where the story will follow the married life of parents Superman and Lois Lane as they deal with the stress and pressure of today, you wouldn’t be wrong for thinking of “Superman & Lois” as some sort of alternate universe sequel to the ABC hit “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” from the ‘90s.

Obviously, the upcoming CW series will have no relation to that abomination (or classic, depending on your nostalgia for that era of superhero TV series), but the idea is strikingly similar. And the idea of a grown adult Superman dealing with the complexities of being the elder statesman of the CW Arrowverse is a stark contrast to the other series that populate the network’s superhero offerings. “Flash,” “Arrow” (and it’s upcoming female-focused spin-off), “Legends of Tomorrow,” “Supergirl,” and “Batwoman” all seem to fit right into the “mid-20s person developing powers and figuring out how to deal with them” mold.

“Superman & Lois” seems destined to provide a more mature look at the hero, where he’s already been established, has a stable relationship, and doesn’t have the same tired love triangle stories that populate these series.

It should be no surprise that the new series comes from producer Greg Berlanti (as does just about everything on CW), along with Todd Helbing, who will write the pilot and serve as showrunner on the potential series. Previously, Helbing was the showrunner for “Flash.”

Obviously, it’s still very early before we find out if CW will move forward, but typically, the network doesn’t work on these superhero series unless the plan is to do at least one season. So, we could be looking at “Superman & Lois” arriving on TV screens next year.

For a potential preview of what’s to come, here are some highlights from “Lois & Clark.” Enjoy!
