It appears that Robert Downey, Jr. is indeed done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For real, this time. Maybe.
Last week, Jeff Goldblum was being interviewed and seemingly broke the news that excited millions of Marvel fans — Robert Downey, Jr. was going to reprise his role as Tony Stark one more time for an episode of the animated series “What If?” As you might imagine, this was a big announcement, as many just assumed that Downey, Jr. was completely done with Marvel Studios since his triumphant departure in “Avengers: Endgame.”
Well, according to The Wrap, Goldblum might have his information mixed up.
In an update to the original story, The Wrap says that even though Disney hasn’t commented on the news, someone close to the production did speak to the outlet to confirm that Downey, Jr. would not be voicing Tony Stark in an episode of “What If?” Now, what that doesn’t explain is how Goldblum got mixed up. Does Tony Stark appear in the cartoon but isn’t voiced by his live-action counterpart? Or perhaps this is yet again another example of Marvel Studios trying to keep a secret?
Honestly, we have plenty of time to speculate, as “What If?” isn’t supposed to debut on Disney+ until 2021. Even if Robert Downey, Jr. isn’t signed on to voice a role now, it doesn’t mean that in the next year, that could change. We’ll just have to wait and see.
But as of now, Robert Downey, Jr. is still retired from the superhero game.
