We finally have our first look at Netflix‘s highly anticipated new horror-thriller series, “Locke & Key.” Based on the popular comic series written by Joe Hill, the show is centered around the Locke family who, after their father’s mysterious death, move to their family’s ancestral home, Keyhouse, in Massachusetts. Soon after, the Locke’s begin to find strange keys that lead them to suspect there may be more to their father’s death than they initially suspected. Here’s the official synopsis:

After their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father’s death. As the Locke children explore the different keys and their unique powers, a mysterious demon awakens — and will stop at nothing to steal them. From Carlton Cuse (“Lost,” “Bates Motel”) and Meredith Averill (“The Haunting of Hill House”), the series is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family.

The series’ journey to the small screen has been a tough one. After being shopped to several networks and streaming services, and even having an entire pilot episode shot starring Miranda Otto and Jesse McCartney, subsequently shut down, the series has finally landed on Netflix (directed by Mark Romanek). And taking into account the service’s glowing track record involving horror properties adapted from literature like “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Gerald’s Game,” and “Hemlock Grove,” it looks like “Locke and Key” may have found a place where it can finally flourish.

In the years since the original pilot was shot, the creative reigns to “Locke & Key” have changed hands multiple times. Big names such as Scott Derrickson (“Doctor Strange”), Mark Romanek (“Never Let Me Go“), and the most recent “Star Trek” film writers and producers, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, being attached to produce a film trilogy based on the books. But the one constant factor throughout the long and arduous production process has always been writer Joe Hill. This is rare, seeing as many writers of properties that are being adapted for the big screen often take a back seat to executives and showrunners.

But Hill has been there through all of it, making sure his characters have the same distinct qualities and voices that made them so popular, to begin with. Hill has written numerous novels, short stories, and comics, and his 2010 novel, “Horns,” was adapted into a film of the same name starring Daniel Radcliffe that he also produced.
The series stars Darby Stanchfield (“Scandal”) as Nina Locke, Jackson Robert Scott (“It” and “It: Chapter 2”) as Bode Locke, Connor Jessup (“American Crime”) as Tyler Locke, Emilia Jones (“Horrible Histories”) as Kinsey Locke, Bill Heck (“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”) as Rendell Locke, Laysla De Oliveira as Dodge, Thomas Mitchell Barnet as Sam Lesser, and Griffin Gluck (“American Vandal”) as Gabe. Andy and Barbara Muchetti (“It” and “It: Chapter 2”) will also serve as executive producers.
