Richard E. Grant Teases A Massive, "Really Smart" Twist In 'Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker'

Richard E. Grant might be an Academy Award-nominated actor, but his recent comments about working on “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” proves one thing — he’s also a massive fanboy. We, obviously, mean this with the utmost respect. But let’s be real, Grant has proven that he’s probably the most excited person on the planet for the upcoming “Star Wars” film and just can’t seem to keep his mouth shut about it. And if the movie doesn’t come out soon, he’s very likely going to spoil something.

In a recent interview with Yahoo, Grant comes dangerously close to revealing something major about ‘Rise of Skywalker.’ The tease is so spoiler-adjacent, the fact that he even mentions it could be construed as a spoiler itself.

Needless to say *slight spoilers ahead* (but not really).

While he didn’t necessarily explain the context of the reveal, it appears that there is going to be at least one big twist in ‘Rise of Skywalker.’

“The big character plot twist that I had no idea would be coming,” Grant said. “It made total emotional sense and story sense and I thought that was really smart. And I think that’s an incredible thing to take something that began with the first movie in 1977 [‘Star Wars: A New Hope’] and nine movies later reach a conclusion/resolution.”

Now, considering this upcoming film is the finale of the Skywalker Saga, it was inevitable that director JJ Abrams would have some twists up his sleeve. I mean, you don’t hire Abrams to make a film if you don’t want some sort of big “oh shit!” moment. That’s the guy’s bread and butter.

So, even though Grant doesn’t give the characters involved or what the nature of the “big character plot twist” is, you have to assume that it’s either involving Rey or Kylo Ren. Those are the two characters that have been the heart and soul of the new trilogy, and it’s long been speculated that either one of them (or both) could be in for some big-time character reveals in ‘Rise.’

Is Grant referring to Rey’s parents revelation? Perhaps Kylo Ren does turn away from the Dark Side at a pivotal moment?

He also talked about the inclusion of Palpatine, which has been a much-debated topic for ‘Star Wars’ fans, as many don’t understand why Abrams is bringing back the big bad for ‘Rise.’

“It runs the risk of the ‘Game of Thrones’ syndrome, where there’s no way you can please all the people all the time, because people are so emotionally invested in this story,” said Grant. “The movie that they’re going to see may not be the movie they have in their heads to see. But for a four-decade-long fan as I am, I thought it pulled off that feat incredibly.”

Luckily, we don’t have much more time to worry about such things, as “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” arrives in theaters on December 20.
