Damon Lindelof, thanks to his relationship with JJ Abrams, has found himself attached to quite a few high-profile film projects over the years. One a couple of his biggest projects with the director were the first two “Star Trek” films of the current rebooted era. And with the future of “Star Trek” on the big screen up in the air, Lindelof seems like a good person to ask about what he thinks the future of the franchise could look like.
Speaking to Fandom, Lindelof was asked about “Star Trek,” specifically after the recent comments by Simon Pegg, which are less optimistic as the actor said that the franchise will never reach the heights of a Marvel Studios film and therefore might not have a bright future on the big screen. When confronted with those comments, Lindelof agreed that ‘Trek’ might never be as big as Marvel, but there’s a creative freedom that exists that could keep the franchise relevant for another 50 years.

“And I feel like there is a wide breadth of ways to attack [‘Star Trek’],” explained the writer. “And you cannot deny that very few things have a 50-year half-life. There is something about ‘Trek’ that resonates. And while it may never be ‘Star Wars’ or ‘The Avengers,’ I still think that it’s important; those are important stories to tell.”
Speaking of “Star Wars” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, since Lindelof has found some recent success tackling a popular IP on TV, with “Watchmen,” is he interested in maybe taking a stab at the MCU or perhaps a galaxy far, far away? Yes, but maybe not right away. And maybe not on the big screen.
“I think that doing something in the Marvel universe, anywhere in the Marvel Universe, would be really potentially exciting for me, especially as they start to get a little bit more experimental,” Lindelof teased. “Some of the things that I’ve seen for ‘WandaVision,’ for example, just feel like, ‘Okay, now we’re getting somewhere.’ Particularly in a television space.”
He continued, “And, at some point, but certainly not in the immediate future, I feel like I would love to do something in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. Maybe a decade from now when I would no longer be blamed for ruining it. That would be a hoot.”
In recent years, thanks to the aforementioned “Watchmen” and his previous HBO series, “The Leftovers,” Lindelof has started to earn back a lot of the respect from fandoms that might have written him off after “Lost” and some of his lesser projects. So, even though 5 years ago, it wasn’t probably an exciting proposition to see what Lindelof could do with an MCU TV series or a “Star Wars” project, perhaps fans would be much more interested in the idea now.
