This year has already seen Cate Blanchett star in one high-profile TV project, with FX’s recent release, “Mrs. America.” But this summer the actress is set to make her Netflix debut in a new drama series titled “Stateless.”
As seen in the trailer for the series, “Stateless” doesn’t feature Blanchett in a starring role. Instead, it’s clear that the new Netflix drama is all about Yvonne Strahovski and the other people that are being held at an Australian detention center where the country detains asylum-seekers until it can determine the legitimacy of their claims. “Stateless” is a six-episode limited series that follows the stories of a small group of immigrants being held at the immigration detention center and what surprising events led them there, as well as the harsh treatment they receive while being kept there.

“Stateless” has a great cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Yvonne Strahovski, Jai Courtney, Asher Keddie, Fayssal Bazzi, Dominic West, and Soraya Heidari. The show is co-created by Blanchett alongside Tony Ayres and Elise McCredie. Though it doesn’t have the buzz and hype of “Mrs. America,” it’ll be interesting to see how Blanchett’s second drama series of 2020 is received by critics. Could we be looking at a situation where the actress finds herself with multiple awards-caliber TV roles this year?
“Stateless” premieres on Netflix on July 8. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Stateless is a powerful and timely series about four strangers whose lives collide at an immigration detention center in the middle of the Australian desert: an airline hostess on the run from a dangerous cult, an Afghan refugee and his family fleeing persecution, a young father escaping a dead-end job and a bureaucrat running out of time to contain a national scandal.
