Like everything else this year, the 2020 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival is looking a little different. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the film festival is undergoing some changes, starting with a reduced program and an unusual coalition with other festivals like Telluride, Venice and NYFF.
The TIFF organizers previously announced that the festival would have a physical component as well as digital screenings, with the first five days of the event hosting physical screenings.
With the festival’s start date of September 10 approaching, TIFF already started announcing their programming. The first wave included films by Francis Lee, Ricky Staub, Reinaldo Marcus Green, with Spike Lee‘s filmed version of “David Byrne’s American Utopia” serving as the opening night film.
In an unprecedented move for unprecedented times, Chloé Zhao‘s upcoming “Nomadland,” starring Frances McDormand will have a simultaneous screening at TIFF, as well as the Venice Film Festival and NYFF.
Now, TIFF has announced the rest of the film’s lineup, and it’s full of great established and newcomer filmmakers.
“We began this year planning for a 45th Festival much like our previous editions,” said Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director and Co-Head of TIFF, “but along the way we had to rethink just about everything. This year’s lineup reflects that tumult. The names you already know are doing brand new things this year, and there’s a whole crop of exciting new names to discover. We’re thankful to every filmmaker and company that joined us on this adventure, and we can’t wait to share these brilliant films with our audiences.”
“TIFF 2020 is a special edition and symbolizes what is possible when collaboration, ingenuity, and passion take centre stage,” said Joana Vicente, Executive Director and Co-Head of TIFF. “It’s also a time for us to celebrate and affirm some of the founding values of TIFF, including the power film has to propel us forward as a society and present a diversity of voices. I’m proud and excited to share these films with audiences.”
The 45th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 10–19, 2020.
