'Mulan' Secures A Theatrical Release In China As New Trailer Confirms Disney+ Plans In The US

We’ve said it time and time again, the release of “Mulan” in Chinese theaters is probably more important than the release in North America. With a story steeped in China’s folklore and starring an entirely Asian cast, it’s clear that Disney intended for its live-action “Mulan” remake to be a big hit in Asia. But then the pandemic happened. Then news of Disney releasing “Mulan” on its streaming service. However, it appears that the action film is still hitting theaters in the Middle Kingdom…sometime in the future.

An exact release date has yet to be confirmed for China, but Disney announced on social media that “Mulan” is approved for a release in the country. As we’ve seen over the years, China has become a box office powerhouse, especially when it comes to action films with well-known characters. But the country is also very strict about which films get approved for theaters, so it’s probably a relief for Disney to secure a release in the future for its blockbuster.

“When the magnolia blossom opens, it lives up to its reputation and arrives as promised,” the Weibo social media account for Disney announced (via Variety). “[‘Mulan’’s] import is confirmed and it will soon burst into bloom in theaters; looking forward to meeting you!”

Obviously, in North America, film fans will have to shell out $7 for a Disney+ subscription and then an additional $30 to watch “Mulan.” This is because the studio isn’t willing to take a chance on releasing the film in theaters stateside right now, as the pandemic is still spiking around the country. However, in China (and throughout Asia), cases have been steadily declining and are pretty well under control. This has allowed for many cinemas around the world to begin reopening in large numbers.

So, if you’re in China and have been anxiously awaiting Disney’s live-action version of “Mulan,” you’ll get the chance to see it on the big screen. We just don’t know exactly when. But hey, here’s a new trailer for the film, proudly announcing its Disney+ plans:
