One of the biggest additions to “The Mandalorian” in its second season was the return of fan-favorite character Boba Fett, with Temuera Morrison playing the bounty hunter. After already announcing a ton of spin-off series, Disney used the season finale of “The Mandalorian,” to leave fans one last announcement in a post-credits scene.
That’s right, we actually are getting a Boba Fett spin-off, or sequel, or something, set to air in December 2021. The actual announcement for “The Book of Boba Fett” comes during a post-credits scene in the final episode of Season 2 of “The Mandalorian.” We see Boba Fett killing a returning Bib Fortuna at Jabba’s Palace and taking his throne, and probably his cartel. This is not unlike what the franchise did with Darth Maul post “Revenge of the Sith,” as the former Sith took over most of the criminal world while staying in the shows.
Boba’s introduction in “The Mandalorian” was first and foremost a fan service moment, as the show took its time before reuniting the bounty hunter with his Mandalorian armor in Chapter 14. But the season finale showed he’s more than just a fancy toy with little screen time, but a tragic figure with a fascinating past just waiting to be explored. When Boba and Din Djarin go find Bo-Katan to ask for her help in rescuing The Child, she immediately recognizes Boba as a clone just from his voice, reminding him and audiences that he’s but one of millions of other clones. It’s an interesting storyline that could and should be explored in the upcoming spin-off. What is Boba Fett but a constant reminder of the Clone Wars?
Now, this announcement comes with several questions attached. Will this be an actual spin-off show, or just the title for Season 3 of “The Mandalorian?” The season finale already puts into question how the show will continue the story of Din and Grogu, but to have Boba Fett take over feels like a mistake. It doesn’t help that “The Book of Boba Fett” is scheduled to premiere around the same time as the next season of “The Mandalorian.” This means that Disney will either air both simultaneously, and risk having Boba overshadow Din Djarin, or have the entire season revolve around Boba rather than Din.
