Apple is the biggest company on the planet, full stop. If the tech giant wanted to, it could wake up today and purchase Disney and still have enough money to start talking to Netflix. So, it makes perfect sense Apple would have no qualms about spending huge amounts of money on top film talent to make sure its Apple TV+ streaming service is a hit. And that’s what the company has done with the forthcoming film from Andy Samberg and Co.

According to THR, Apple has struck a deal for a new film from the likes of Andy Samberg, “Palm Springs” writer Andy Siara, Noah Hawley, and Ben Stiller. The untitled film is described as a “sci-fi comedy-drama.” It’s unclear what the actual plot of the film is about, but really, all you need to know is that it’s an original idea by “BoJack Horseman” creator and author Raphael Bob-Waksberg. And if we’ve already seen an animated series about a mentally ill anthropomorphic horse from the creator, who knows what else we can expect? It should be interesting, either way.
All we can say for certain is the film is written by Siara and stars Samberg. Hawley and Stiller are on board as producers. This is an exciting project for a number of reasons. First, it’s clear that this much talent is great to see on any one project. But also, it’s exciting that Siara and Samberg are reteaming after the runaway success of their recent film, “Palm Springs,” which is in the thick of awards discussion and easily one of the best comedies of 2020.
And with Apple TV+ having to compete with giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, and Hulu, just to name several, it’s clear that the tech company has to make big moves if it wants to stay relevant. Judging by the early success of Disney+, thanks to its massive library of franchise titles, Apple can really only outspend the competition to stay in the race, for now.
It’s unclear when production on this film project might begin, but we’re hoping to see this get in front of cameras sooner rather than later.
