One of the films that have been in the never-ending delay loop since the pandemic began last year is the upcoming sci-fi action film, “The Tomorrow War.” However, it appears that Amazon is ready to save that film from further delays by purchasing it and moving it to streaming.
According to Variety, Amazon is in talks with Skydance to purchase the distribution rights to “The Tomorrow War” for a sum close to $200 million. Yes, that’s two-hundred-million-dollars. Why would Amazon want to spend that much on a sci-fi action film? Well, you have to imagine that Chris Pratt being the star has something to do with it. “The Tomorrow War” tells the story of the humans’ fight with aliens, which isn’t going well for our side. And to help the humans overcome their disadvantages, they develop a way to travel back in time and get warriors from the past to help fight in this conflict.
As mentioned, Chris Pratt stars in the film, which was seemingly going to be the first in a new franchise for the A-lister. And Pratt is no stranger to franchises. He’s probably best known for the lead role in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which has crossed over into other Marvel Studios properties like the two most-recent ‘Avengers’ films as well as the forthcoming “Thor: Love and Thunder.” In addition to that massive role, he’s also the lead in the “Jurassic World” franchise, which has a third film expected to arrive in theaters soon enough. So, it makes sense that Amazon would spend $200 million on a film that stars the man behind two billion-dollar franchises.
If “The Tomorrow War” shifts to streaming, it would be the latest major film to skip theaters during the pandemic and take the quick money on a digital platform. This would be another major loss for theaters, who are barely getting by as it is and have been desperately hoping to have blockbusters like this sci-fi action film arrive and attract audiences back to the cinema.
Alas, it doesn’t appear that Pratt’s “The Tomorrow War” is going to help that cause.
