In the ever-surprising game of Hollywood Lottery, if you have a ticket with Darren Aronofsky, Jared Leto, and Blumhouse, you’re the big winner.
According to Deadline, Darren Aronofsky’s next film is set to be “Adrift,” and he’s reteaming with his “Requiem for a Dream” star Jared Leto and superstar horror producer, Jason Blum, to bring it to life. The Blumhouse film is based on a short story from author Koji Suzuki (“The Ring”) will tell the story of a fishing boat that discovers a strange distress call coming from an abandoned yacht. As the fishing boat begins to tow the other to safety, a lonely deckhand realizes that there might be something supernatural happening on the empty yacht.

As mentioned, the recently announced “The Whale” with Brendan Fraser is still next up for Aronofsky, whose most recent feature is the 2017 drama, “mother!” Previous to that, he’s probably best known for the aforementioned ‘Requiem,’ as well as films like “Pi,” “The Fountain,” “The Wrestler,” and, of course, “Black Swan.”
Leto’s star has risen quite a bit from his time starring in “Requiem for a Dream.” He’s won an Oscar for his performance in the film, “The Dallas Buyer’s Club.” And he’s also appeared in major films like “Blade Runner 2049,” “Suicide Squad,” “Panic Room,” and the upcoming superhero film, “Morbius,” which just got moved to 2022. He’s also set to produce and star in “Tron 3” and the forthcoming Ridley Scott film, “Gucci.”
As for Blumhouse, working with Darren Aronofsky is a huge boost for the company. Normally, Blumhouse films are all about the franchises and cheap scares, but sometimes Jason Blum’s studio works with folks like David Gordon Green and Jordan Peele to bring a bit more artistry to the run-of-the-mill horror feature. And clearly, working with Aronofsky could lead to a more auteur wave of features from Blumhouse. We’ll have to wait and see.
The film is currently looking for distribution deals and will likely find one in no time. As for when we might see “Adrift” arrive in theaters, nothing has been revealed.
