“Bad Trip” is a comedy film that mixes a fictional narrative with candid pranks on unsuspecting victims. So, obviously, when crafting the score and music for the film, you have to find a way to get star Eric Andre to sing a showtune, right?
With “Bad Trip” finally hitting Netflix on March 26, we’re thrilled to premiere two tracks from the upcoming soundtrack, including one that features Andre singing a pretty damn catchy tune. The music comes from composers Joseph Shirley and Ludwig Göransson. Göransson is a well-known film composer, with credits that include “Black Panther,” “Tenet,” and “The Mandalorian.” But for Shirley, this marks his first film soundtrack, as he worked closely with his longtime creative partner, Göransson.
“‘Bad Trip’ was definitely a trip to say the least,” said Shirley. “Working with [director] Kitao Sakurai and Eric André was more like a journey. We explored a vast number of genres and styles in the course of scoring the film – from traditional Hollywood musicals, to contemporary Hip Hop, to heartfelt buddy moments, and everything in between. It was a road trip of music in and of itself. We can’t overstate how fun, unpredictable, and hilarious the process was to work with Kitao and Eric on this movie, and we hope the audience will have just as much fun as we did making it.”
He added, “Very early on in the production, Eric and Kitao asked us to compose a big musical number, working with a melody and lyric that Eric had written for his character’s love for his high school crush. There were a ton of iterations of this song before we landed on the sprightly on-the-nose pop-jazz version now known as ‘I Saw a Girl Today.’ Eric would send me voice memos of ideas he had for the orchestration or lyrics, which I’d then record as demos singing it myself and shoot them over to Kitao and Eric before he would come to the studio to track his parts. The coordination of this song with how they shot the scene is amazing to me – cutting between planned and unplanned choreography, cast, and candid cast – all while Eric sings his cheerful tune right through the middle of the madness happening around him.”
