In terms of French cinema, you can’t get much better than filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin. The man behind features such as “The Sentinel,” “My Golden Days,” and “Ismael’s Ghosts” consistently brings something new to each film, often switching genres between films. So, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that, coming off of a crime drama and a Philip Roth adaptation, Desplechin is venturing into the realm of family drama for “Brother and Sister.”

According to Arte (via The Film Stage), Arnaud Desplechin is set to begin production shortly on his next film, titled “Brother and Sister.” In addition to the film being announced, it appears the filmmaker is reteaming with French actress Marion Cotillard for the film. As the title implies, “Brother and Sister” follows the story of two siblings, both in their 50s, as they reunite after more than two decades due to the death of their parents. Previously, the director worked with Cotillard on the thriller, “Ismael’s Ghosts.” The film also sees Desplechin reteam with actor Melvil Poupaud, who worked with him on “A Christmas Tale.”
As mentioned, Desplechin recently debuted the crime drama, “Oh Mercy!” at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. That film has yet to receive North American distribution, but hopefully, it happens soon enough. The filmmaker is already putting the finishing touches on “Deception,” which is the aforementioned Philip Roth adaptation that will likely debut sometime this year.

In addition to the news about Desplechin’s next film, Arte also announced a new feature from breakout filmmaker Pietro Marcello. After his debut film, 2019’s “Martin Eden” received near-universal acclaim, film fans have been curious to see what Marcello would do for his follow-up. Apparently, that feature is set to be “L’Envol,” a French romance about a woman’s life over 20 years, spanning 1919 to 1939. The film is set to star Juliette Jouan, Raphaël Thierry, Louis Garrel, and Noémie Lvovsky.
Obviously, it’s far too early to know when we might see these new films debut, but a 2022 festival seems likely.
