Way back in 2016, after the success of “The Big Short,” it was reported that Adam McKay would team up with Jennifer Lawrence for a film titled “Bad Blood,” about the downfall of Theranos founder, Elizabeth Holmes. Then, like so many projects, things went silent. Not a peep about the project. Well, a couple of more McKay films later, it appears the project is back on the slate with Apple ready to help bring it to life.
According to Deadline, Apple has decided to produce and distribute the upcoming Elizabeth Holmes film about the meteoric rise and quick fall of the Theranos founder, who is currently on trial for her crimes. Apple will team up with original studio, Legendary, to bring the film to theaters. And yes, Adam McKay is still on board to write and direct with Lawrence still attached to star as Holmes.
For those unaware, the story of Elizabeth Holmes is pretty bonkers, to say the least. The Stanford dropout founded Theranos, a blood-testing company that quickly became a hot ticket company to back in Silicon Valley. The venture capitalist boom felt by Theranos propelled Holmes to being a self-made billionaire. Only one problem—the technology she touted as revolutionary was allegedly never real and her empire quickly fell, leading to her trial which is going on now.
McKay’s upcoming film isn’t the only Elizabeth Holmes biopic in development. Hulu is also working on a miniseries about the story with Amanda Seyfriend attached to star. It’s unclear when that series might hit the streaming service, just as it’s unclear when McKay and Lawrence will begin production on their film.
In the meantime, you can watch McKay’s new film, which also stars Jennifer Lawrence, titled “Don’t Look Up,” which arrives in select theaters on December 10 before hitting Netflix on December 24.
