With the murders of George Floyd and various other people of color by police over the past several years, there’s an added layer of discussion that comes with any film or TV show that attempts to cover law enforcement. Many believe it’s not a true representation of the police if the content doesn’t address the fact that officers aren’t always the delightful, well-intentioned peacekeepers they want you to believe they are. And Kate Winslet wants you to know that if there is a Season 2 of her police drama, “Mare of Easttown,” the series will not shy away from covering the more despicable side of law enforcement.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Kate Winslet was asked about police in films and TV series, especially in relation to her most recent role in “Mare of Easttown.” The question about whether or not a police badge reflects the honorable image it is meant to convey came up. Winslet doesn’t confirm there will be a Season 2 of her show, but she did say that if there is, the recent discussion about police brutality will make it into ‘Easttown.’
“I don’t know if I’m going to be playing Mare again,” Winslet revealed. “But if we were to do a second season, then for sure these atrocities which have existed in the police force here and in America will find their way into the stories we tell. One hundred percent. You can’t pretend these things haven’t happened.”
She added, “It’s horrible, isn’t it? This moment in time. It’s horrific. You can hear me, I can’t quite find the words because we all feel so betrayed and powerless. We have to turn this moment into something meaningful. We have to use our voices on behalf of people who don’t have one. That matters to me now in ways that hadn’t even crossed my mind in my 20s.”
The idea of Season 2 of “Mare of Easttown” is nothing new. For months now, Winslet has been asked about the possibility of the limited series coming back for another season. And it would appear that the actress, as well as the filmmakers responsible for the series, would love to see it happen. However, the issue seems to be whether or not they can find an appropriate story to tell.
So, while it’s clear Winslet is still thinking about Season 2, whether or not we actually see it is up in the air. But if we do, it does appear “Mare of Easttown” won’t shy away from covering more controversial topics.
