It’s not all that often that Lee Daniels directs a film. Before the release of 2020’s “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” the filmmaker’s previous film was all the way back in 2013 with “The Butler.” But even though he doesn’t make films every year, each of his features is immediately brought up during awards season, which makes his upcoming Netflix horror film all the more exciting.

According to Variety, Netflix has bought the rights to produce and distribute the upcoming untitled horror film directed by Lee Daniels. And with the announcement, we know the cast of the film, which will include Andra Day, Glenn Close, Octavia Spencer, Rob Morgan, Caleb McLaughlin, and Aunjanue Ellis. While the film doesn’t have a title, the plot revolves around a mother in Indiana who believes her young child is possessed by a demon.
In addition to directing, Daniels co-wrote the feature alongside David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum. As mentioned, Daniles’ most recent film is ‘Billie Holiday,’ which also stars Day in the lead role. He’s probably best known for his films “The Butler” and “Precious,” both of which earned a lot of awards season love when they were released.
There’s no release date for the untitled film yet. Netflix is expected to spend $65 million to cover the budget of the production, as well as the hefty cast salaries. Production is expected to begin sometime this year, which would make 2023 the earliest we’ll likely see the feature.
