David Blue Garcia Talks 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' Being Hired Mid-Production, The "Infamous" Bus Scene & More [The Playlist Podcast]

Nearly 50 years after the original was released, Netflix is ready for a whole new generation to discover “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” with a new sequel arriving today. And on this episode of The Playlist Podcast, filmmaker David Blue Garcia joins to talk about the latest entry in the history of ‘Chainsaw’ films.

For those unaware, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” tells the story, well, of a massacre involving a chainsaw in the state of Texas. And for this film, you can ignore all the previous sequels (though there are some wild ass gems in there if you want to explore further). Garcia’s film picks up 50 years after the original film and finds Old Man Leatherface busting out the chainsaw yet again to hack up some people.

In the interview, Garcia talks about the legacy of the “Texas Chainsaw” franchise and why he was so excited to tell this story. We also talk about his unique situation as director of this film, where he was hired after production already began to take over from previous filmmakers after they departed due to creative differences.

“It was actually kinda a lot of fun,” said Garcia about coming onto the project late. “It felt like I could just start fresh and my ideas were just flowing. I was flying by the seat of my pants, kinda in the way they made the original film, which was made in an indie way, where they’re coming up with their shot lists every day and figuring it out on set.”

“I came in prepared,” he added. “I was doing storyboards every night. Sometimes on the way to set. It was fun to be spontaneous like that, to come up with the movie as we went.”

We also talk about what it takes for a Texas-based filmmaker to tell a “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” movie in the country of Bulgaria. It’s surprisingly easy, in fact. And if you’ve seen the film, we do touch on the bus scene, which Garcia hopes will become “infamous” over time.
