In an interview with the actor and director Tim Burton on Jonathan Ross BBC America program, Johnny Depp discussed his upcoming Keith Richards documentary that will serve as his first directorial effort since 1997’s “The Brave.”
“It’s a thing we’ve talked about for a number of years now,” Depp explains to Ross. “We finally had a moment, the two of us, to get together and do like a first installment if you will. So basically, all it is is exactly what Keith and I have been doing over the years. Just sit around in hotel rooms, gabbing, having a drink and we documented it. So it’s something we’re doing together and we did five days. It went extremely well, incredible.”
Though it sounds like Depp has put the doc on hold for Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s “The Tourist” and will seemingly tackle the project in bits and pieces between his tightly-packed 2010 schedule. He currently has “The Tourist” shooting in Venice, Rob Marshall’s “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” shooting in the summer and possibly Burton’s “Dark Shadows” in the works for later this year so he should still have time to work on the film here and there.
Depp also previously revealed that “[his] editor is already working on kilometers of archive footage and footage of his concerts” so, in one form or another, production is probably still taking place with the interview footage, the material he has shot and whatever else he has amassed that can intertwined with all the relevant archival footage.
The project might not see the light of day until 2011 unless Depp can cut back on his film projects, but at the same time, it doesn’t sound like he’s in any rush. With Depp and Richards involved, the documentary is sure to make waves whenever it’s released. Who wouldn’t want to sit down with these two for a few drinks, laughs and Keith Richards anecdotes?
