Jay Baruchel Talks Brutal Hockey Film 'Goon' And Potential Directorial Debut With Slasher Pic 'Pig'

Jay Baruchel recently spoke about some of his upcoming projects while doing press for his upcoming rom-com, “She’s Just Out Of My League.”

The actor first discussed his hockey film titled “Goon,” which he first mentioned in June of last year. Baruchel had hoped to shoot sometime this year and now an August shoot now is his perfect, best-case scenario (doesn’t mean it will necessarily happen though).

“We like to think of [“Goon”] as a funnier ‘Raging Bull,'” Baruchel explains to ComingSoon. “It’s real mean, and it’s truthful, and it’s everything hockey is without any of the bullshit sports movie clichés, and it is dead funny. Lot of swears, that’s a hard R. It’s a very crass movie, there are something like 20 fights in it, but it’s the badass movie that hockey fans have been waiting to see their whole lives. It will be by far the best hockey movie since ‘Slapshot.’ Hockey fans have needed one for a long time, it’s a sport that movies never do well. Ours will be a fucking movement.”

That alone will prove to be an interesting prospect though considering Kevin Smith also has his self-described magnum opus and similarly epic “Hit Somebody,” starring Seann William Scott lined up for potential production this year (it still has no financing). It would appear hockey fans will have a lot to happy about at the movies.

Baruchel also revealed a new slasher film debut he’s been scripting titled “Pigs” that may end up as his directorial debut.

“I’m trying to get that going as best I can, ’cause all I want to do is direct horror movies in Montreal for the rest of my life,” he reportedly claimed semi-facetiously. “Without giving too much away, it’s a 21st century re-imagining of the slasher film with a lot of socio-racial commentary, that’s all I’ll say.”

Sadly, the actor has seemingly been working for a paycheck of late with his last few efforts including “She’s Out Of My League,” “How To Train Your Dragon” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” Perhaps he’s just building up a kitty for his lifetime of doing Montreal-based horror films? He also notes that his Internet-short-turned-feature-film “Jay & Seth Vs. The Apocalypse” will be happening “sooner rather than later” but we wouldn’t hold our breath as that one’s been floating around for almost two years now.
