Love-her-or-loathe-her writer-producer Diablo Cody recently took to IF magazine to update us on her upcoming adaptation of 80’s cult teen novel “Sweet Valley High” and zom-rom-com “Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament,” which she is a producer on.
“I just started writing [‘Sweet Valley’],” says Cody. “I’m very excited about that. It’s classic ‘80s series of books about these twins Elizabeth and Jessica and it’s going to be set in the ‘80s and true to the source material.” At least it’s good to see she’s not getting sucked into the ‘modern reimagining’ fad.
Geoff LaTulippe’s adaptation of ‘Breathers,’ meanwhile, the “Juno” and “Jennifer’s Body” scribe noted that they “have a script and I am thrilled with it and hope we can go into production with it soon.” Fox Searchlight are backing the production.
“It’s a zombie love story,” she adds. “Zombies are so hot now, but I like to think it’s about the personal side of being a zombie and being ostracized.” Any chance this film could see Cody step behind the camera? Probably not, yet, but after a year highlighted by works from Bigelow, Scherfig and Campion, the time is ripe for maverick Cody to take the next step.
