Alright, this is pretty cute and clever viral marketing we’ll admit.
Here’s the trailer for “Nation’s Pride,” the movie within the movie of Quentin Tarantino’s WWII epic, “Inglourious Basterds,” that’s directed by one of his stars, torture porn enthusiast Eli Roth.
Sure, you probably see more “Nation’s Pride” footage in this trailer than you do in all of ‘Inglourious,’ but that’s probably besides the point.
The context? In ‘Basterds’ Daniel Brühl plays the German War hero Fredrick Zoller, who’s expert marksmanship exploits have been turned into a Nazi propaganda film directed by Joseph Goebbels. The film is of course the one that plays at the protagonists, Shosanna (Melanie Laurent)’s theater where the big climax of the film happens. We’d say these were spoilers, but all the ‘Inglourious’ trailers, perhaps in a desperate bid to show off the best parts, have already spoiled this movie the world over. Then again, everyone and their mom read the audacious script so it shouldn’t be a problem.
“Nation’s Pride” plays at “Le Gammar Theater in Paris on August 21, which is clever, winky code for the same day that “Inglourious Basterds” hits theaters worldwide. We were largely disappointed in Tarantino’s sprawling film when we saw it at Cannes, but we’ll give it another shot when it screens for critics soon, but since the film is one minute longer, we suspect little has changed. It’s becoming more and more apparent these days that Tarantino’s strength is truly in his writing, so what we really want now is that long-ass version of ‘Basterds’ to come out in some novelized form. The script was a tremendous read, so we’ll always have that, but we’d love more, so we hope the filmmaker keeps to his potential plan of releasing the entire beast in some kind of written form (please no graphic novel with cheesy, blood-soaked, Eli-Roth inspired art, we’ll just take the book, thank you very much).
