Alright, you’ve already seen a bunch of new photos of “Iron Man 2” from the EW preview we wrote about late last week, but the full edition of the magazine has a few small quotes that the online version doesn’t have.
Quotes that come from the magazine and aren’t online. “Iron Man 2” director Jon Favreau downplays talk of the alcoholism storyline.”If you went straight into, ‘Demon In A Bottle,’ it would end up feeling like, ‘Leaving Las Vegas.’ That story doesn’t give you much.”
So it sounds like they may hint at this well-known storyline, but not delve into deeply, which really shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Will they ever really tackle this story head on? It’s a intelligent popcorn super hero film and if they devoted an entire movie to “Demon In A Bottle,” that movie would probably be one of the most depressing, non-actiony super hero movies ever, no? Then again, Rhodey (Don Cheadle) could take up the War Machine costume, but to watch Robert Downey Jr. on the sidelines? We doubt you’re ever going to see that happen fully.
An interesting quote in the magazine piece comes from Marvel head Kevin Feige who admits that the “Iron Man,” comics don’t feature interesting villains. “We don’t have a Green Goblin, a Joker or a Sandman. In every Iron Man comic, Tony Stark is the most interesting character.”
Apparently Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer character is a “fast-talking weapons manufacturer who fancies himself the next Tony Stark.” Both Hammer and Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash character join forces to take him down. “Each one is like a doppelganger of a side of Tony,” Feige said. Apparently Favreau thought of Rourke because his “intensity would balance Robert Downey Jr. out well.”
Your last character detail comes from Scarlett Johansson’s who says of her Black Widow role (you can see her in costume here), “In the comics she was injected with a serum that made her recover at a superhuman speed. Now she’s just badass. Her skills in hand-to-hand combat are her superpowers.”
“Iron Man 2” is due in theaters May 7th, 2010 and filming wrapped-up on Friday. So unless they have more shots under their belt, don’t expect to see any more set-photos from the paparazzi
