Cary Fukunaga's Musical With Arcade Fire Member & Beirut A Go?

We’ve already detailed, “Sin Nombre,” director, Cary Fukunaga‘s hopeful plans to make a musical for his next project. But he’s got many projects on the burners including a sci-fi film.

The musical idea is ambitious though and Fukunaga hopes to get Owen Pallet of Final Fantasy and the Arcade Fire and Zach Condon of Beirut to score the film. But when we spoke to him last, he seemed tentative. “We’re just in talks and there’s nothing set yet” (Condon almost scored his incredible debut, “Sin Nombre,” but dropped out at the last minute).

But one of our pals in attendance at the Edinburgh Film Festival, currently happening in Scotland as we speak saw the film over the weekend and stuck around for the Q&A afterwards. He says it sounds like the director has decided the project is indeed next and felt confident enough to tell the audience about it, plus the confirmed participation of Beirut and Pallet. He also noted the first detail about the musical in that it would be “a kind of fantastical folk story.” Wonder if that’s some sort of crazy, elvin type fairy tale or something. We’re very interested to hear more.

Here’s our pal Graham with his little emailed report. “I thought I’d let you know that Cary Fukunaga did a Q&A after ‘Sin Nombre’ showed tonight and said his next film is the musical and one of the Arcade Fire will be involved. It will be with Focus Features again I think. He did mention Beirut would be involved too. He made it sound like it was green lit yesterday.”

Considering Funkunaga has a deal at Focus who already put out his debut, this would make sense. So, fantastical folk tale musical, Final Fantasy and Beirut? Where do we sign up? Coming 2010? Let’s hope so though musicals presumably take a ton of time to plan out and write. Regardless, we’re greatly looking forward to this one whenever it hits.

Pallet is scoring Richard Kelly’s “The Box” with fellow Arcade Fire members next and Beirut’s Condon helped write some music for Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera’s upcoming pseudo-documentary, “Paper Heart.”
