Kevin Smith Wants You to Know He's Cheap

Apparently the View-Askewniverse has been all up in a tizzy since the announcement of Kevin Smith’s next movie “A Couple of Dicks,” which is set to star Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan. First Showing reported that the devoted faithful were up in arms, apparently, because Warner Brothers carelessly released the info that Smith was helming the movie but hadn’t written it – a first for the director. So the Internets went crazy with the news that Kevin Smith sold out or some crap and was making a studio movie for the big bucks. After we were done loling at that being the new definition of “selling out” as applied to Kevin Smith, we went to watch this YouTube interview where Smith explains he’s actually making less money for this movie than he did for “Dogma,” which he says was also not a lot of money and that the film’s overall budget is not the blockbuster size thing you’d expect it to be. Then Smith waxes on about the “Miramaxization” of the movie industry – the spread of smaller budget, good movies vs. the Michael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer giant blow up overinflated budget world.

Two notes: Kevin Smith, stop being so obsessed with justifying yourself to the Internet. Internet, stop being so obsessed with other people’s bank accounts and your false sense of what is credible. Obviously the real furor here is that Kevin Smith is directing a Bruce Willis movie. Priorities people.

Other than that, the curious can catch “A Couple of Dicks,” apparently a cop buddy movie, when it’s released on January 29, 2010. It’ll probably change your life.
