A lot of small news out there this week and past weekend we thought we’d throw together in one garish, unsorted melange.
Alan Moore has called comic fanboys utterly and tragically hopeless. “[Comics are] being bought in many cases by hopeless nostalgics or, putting the worst construction on it, perhaps cases of arrested development who are not prepared to let their childhoods go, no matter how trite the adventures of their various heroes and idols.” [Wired]
After winning the top prize in 2007 for “Lust, Caution,” Ang Lee has been picked to head the Venice Film Festival jury later this year in August. [THR]
After cleaning up during nomination time, “Seraphine” took it all the way home and won the Best Picture Caesar award last week. It’s the equivalent of the Oscar Best Picture in France. Vincent Cassel was honored for his role as “Public Enemy Number One” in Jean-Francois Richet’s multiple-nominated drama, “Mesrine.” We’ll get to see to see both soon and we’re very excited. And there is some justice in the world, two one of the wonderful and lovely ladies of “I’ve Loved You So Long,” Kristin Scott Thomas and Elsa Zylberstein won the Best Supporting Female acting prize. Cannes will honor Clint Eastwood with an honorary Palme D’or later this year. [Variety]

A friend for life? This Australian article suggests Michelle Williams and Kelly Reichardt really hit it off on the set of “Wendy & Lucy,” and the two will definitely collaborate again sometime in the future. They also note that Williams listened to a lot of Elliott Smith and Will Oldham during the shooting of the austere and heartbreaking film. [News.Au]
John Corigliano (“The Red Violin”) has been tapped to score Martin Campbell’s “The Edge Of Darkness” starring Mel Gibson which comes out presumably later this year under the aegis of Warner Bros. [FilmMusic]
McG is still stalking Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger so they’ll do something for “Terminator Salvation.” Oh and McG is also fighting the studio over a rating. He wants an R-Rating, they want PG-13. [Sci-Fi Wire]
James Newton Howard, one half of the “The Dark Knight” composers is scoring “Salt” which will star Angelina Jolie, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Liev Schrieber. [UpcomingFilmScores]
“Watchmen” composer Tyler Bates says his dark ambient score was influenced by a ton of contemporary music including gauzy ’80s keyboard sounds (Jan Hammer, German composer Klaus Doldinger and Leonard Cohen’s synth-infused ’80s output), meditative guitar (Daniel Lanois) and harder edge post-punk and metal (Gang Of Four, Joy Division, Metallica and Slayer).He doesn’t really understand how to read comics either. “The first time I read one it was just understanding when to look at the pictures and then read the bubbles.” [Rolling Stone]
A bit of slightly old, but happy news. The Iraqi rockers of the Middle East metal documentary, “Heavy Metal In Baghdad,” Acrassicauda, have made it to America. [Variety]
