Exclusive: Preview The 'Krisha' Score By Former Dirty Projectors Member Brian McOmber

KrishaAs always, the success of any film involves a lot of parts, and while SXSW and Cannes darling "Krisha" has rightfully earned acclaim for its performances, notably that of the film’s lead Krisha Fairchild. The immediacy of the direction by Trey Edward Shults has also played a vital role. But as we noted in our review, the score by Brian McComber, who brings a distinct touch of Penderecki, doesn’t go unnoticed either.

A former member of acclaimed indie band Dirty Projectors, McOmber zeroed in on the emotional beats felt by the titular character as she makes a surprise, and not particularly welcome return home during the holidays.

“It’s a turbulent film that unfolds over the course of one fateful Thanksgiving Day. Trey Shults, the writer and director, likes to say that it is ‘the biggest day of Krisha’s life.’  Every single music cue was intended to mirror and accentuate Krisha’s emotional state as she tries to rekindle a relationship with her estranged family,” McOmber said. “Hope, anxiety, fear, nostalgia, anger and desperation are just some of the emotions in the film that we tried to accentuate with the music,” described McOmber. “We knew we wanted each music cue to have a unique vibe, instrumentation and style, while at the same time avoid anything that didn’t feel appropriate to the films sonic palette.  It was challenging to come up with music so varied in emotion, style and instrumentation for such a small film.  We tried not to get carried away by ambition.”

"Krisha" is now playing in limited release, and the soundtrack will be available digitally on Friday, April 8th and on CD later this year. Check out this exclusive preview below.
