“I love the cruelty in her writing,” “The Two Faces Of January” writer/director Hossein Amini said at the Sydney Film Festival (via Variety) about author Patricia Highsmith, whose novel serves as the source material for his film. “Viggo really embraces the ugly side of characters…not a lot of stars do.” And you can see how ugly Viggo Mortensen gets with this new trailer for the thriller.
Co-starring alongside Oscar Isaac and Kirsten Dunst, the sunny noir follows a seemingly innocent, affluent couple, on vacation in Greece, who need the help of a local tour guide, when they mixed up in murder. And so begins the kind of story only Highsmith could write, and it seems like the kind of thing that should easily work, but according to our review out of Berlin by Jessica Kiang, it doesn’t quite lock into place. She writes that the film is a “a slack, minor entry in the Highsmith canon” and “a sterile affair, [with] no ambiguity, no ambivalence, just people doing one thing and then another.” Bummer.
