"It Sadly Won't Happen": Benedict Cumberbatch Rules Himself Out Of 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

So much for all those rumors. Back in September, 2013, Latino Review insisted that Benedict Cumberbatch would be in “Star Wars: Episode VII,” and any denials from his camp would need be taken in the same way as his deflections early on about playing Khan in “Star Trek Into Darkness” (which turned out to be true).

The site swore that while Cumberbatch’s ‘Episode VII’ role would be “very small,” it would expand and get much bigger in “Episode VIII” and “Episode IX.” To their credit, it seemed like Cumberbatch was having some kind of conversations with “Star Wars: Episode VII”-director J.J. Abrams, but then again, who in Hollywood hasn’t? A list of the actors who have sat down with Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy for a potential part in the new “Star Wars” would be the size of a phone book; as many actors have already said, “everyone has met for ‘Star Wars’” (Saoirse Ronan is just one of many actresses who auditioned and then told us she didn’t get the part).

Either way, it looks like Cumberbatch is out. Australian entertainment site The Iris, who was live-tweeting Benedict’s Q&A at OzComicCon, reports his tweet admitting that ship has sailed. “I would’ve liked a part in J.J.’s new Star Wars but it won’t happen sadly.”

Cumberbatch also counted himself out of appearing as Dr. Who in any upcoming versions of the popular TV show. Well, that appears to be that (unless you adhere to the conspiracy that this is misdirection). “Episode VII” opens December 2015.
