Gregg Araki, the filmmaker who brought us “Mysterious Skin,” “The Doom Generation” and “Smiley Face” among others, is back with his next effort, “White Bird In A Blizzard.” And though it premiered back in January at the Sundance Film Festival, it has taken a few months to lock up distribution, but now has a home.
Magnolia Pictures has announced they’ve snapped up the North American rights to the film. Based on the novel by Laura Kasischke and starring Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Christopher Meloni, Shiloh Fernandez, Gabourey Sidibe, Thomas Jane and Angela Bassett, the 1988-set film follows Kat, a college-bound teenager who is just discovering and relishing her newfound sexuality when her mother (Green), a beautiful, enigmatic, and haunted woman, disappears. Having lived for so long in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, Kat barely registers her mother’s absence and certainly doesn’t blame her doormat of a father, Brock (Meloni), for the loss. But as time passes, Kat begins to come to grips with how deeply Eve’s disappearance has affected her. Returning home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with the truth about her mother’s departure, and her own denial about the events surrounding it.
The final result is one we called out of Sundance Araki’s “most grown up film to date,” one that confirms his “individual, highly unique vision of cinema.”
No release date yet, but presumably the film is coming later this year. Until there, here’s some new images.
