Big-screen success has been elusive for the comedic duo, but that hasn’t kept Danny McBride and Jody Hill from creating one of the most iconic comedic characters in Kenny Powers on the HBO series “Eastbound & Down.” Though that show is winding down with its final season airing later this year, McBride and Hill are sticking around on the famed cable network. Deadline reports that the two creative partners are developing another comedy series for the network, described as their “look at high school.” The final season of “Eastbound & Down” arrives in September, just in time for the MLB playoffs.
Hill and McBride aren’t the only ones sticking around HBO, perennially unlucky David Milch—his last few shows (“Luck,” “John From Cincinnati” and “Deadwood”) were all cancelled—is developing yet another show for the network. Titled “The Money,” it promises ”a look at a dynastic New York media family, a look at power, the complexity of modern urban life.” The show’s already at the pilot with stage with casting already beginning and “The Other Boleyn Girl” director Justin Chadwick brought on to helm the episode. Here’s hoping Milch is able to break his unlucky streak.
Not content to being the king of cable dramas, HBO is eyeing comedy series “The Third Coast” (per Deadline) with Annette Bening set to play the lead and Jay Roach—behind previous HBO movies “Recount” and “Game Change”—set to helm the series. Playwright Paul Rudnick is penning the script which revolves around Bening as “a larger-than-life casting director in New Mexico.” No word on the timeline yet.
Score another win for CBS and Stephen King, as Deadline is reporting the summer hit “Under The Dome”—based on his own novel—has been renewed for a second season, which is a fairly no-brainer move. Not having read King’s original novel, we’re unsure how this news will work out for Britt Robertson’s schedule now that she’s landed the female lead in “Tomorrowland.” Though it’s still a year out from the premiere of the second season, with King already tapped to write the debut episode.
While “The Spectacular Now” director James Ponsoldt is busy trying to mount his own Hillary Clinton biopic “Rodham,” and NBC busy on a mini-series starring Diane Lane, the New York Times is reporting that CNN will produce a documentary on Clinton from Oscar-winning “Inside Job” director Charles Ferguson. Set for a premiere on the network sometime next year, there’s also plan to have a limited run in some theaters prior to its small-screen debut. Perhaps to meet Oscar eligibility requirements?
“Parks & Recreation” is expanding the roster of Eagleton employees with Sam Elliott to play the Ron Swanson of the Parks Department over there and Kristen Bell lined up as the Leslie Knope-esque enthusiast. That sounds pretty awesome.
And finally, Showtime has released a behind-the-scenes look at their upcoming new drama series “Masters of Sex,” which stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as famed human sexuality researchers Dr. William Howell Masters and Virginia Johnson. The whole thing runs under three minutes and features interviews with some of the cast members. “Masters of Sex” premieres September 29th on Showtime.
