Yes, the “Veronica Mars” movie is real and actually happening. And we’ll leave the debate regarding the Kickstarter campaign behind for now, and focus on the film itself. Expectations are sky high for creator Rob Thomas who admits he has toyed with the idea of tweaking the show, but ultimately concluded that he has to “give the people what they want,” and he’s now revealed a few key morsels that fans of the show will undoubtedly scrutinize and obsess over as the movie heads into production this summer.
The big question right now is what event will see Veronica and everyone else back together after all these years? The answer is simple: a high school reunion. “Fans want to see those all those characters back together again,” Thomas told TVLine. “And the reunion set piece allows me to do that.” And if you think that’s a pretty clumsy or easy device to use to jump start a movie, Thomas has developed an entire backstory for what Veronica has been doing the last decade.
“She transferred away from Hearst college after that freshman year and went up to Stanford and finished her undergraduate degree. And then she went to Columbia Law School. She’s certainly been back to Neptune from time to time to see her dad and Mac and Wallace, but she hasn’t worked a PI case since the last one we all saw in the final episode of Season 3,” he explained. “She ruined her dad’s chance for re-election and she decided that that path had caused too much chaos in her life. And so she hasn’t worked a PI case in nine years. And when we meet her, she’s sort of like where Tom Cruise was in the beginning of ‘The Firm.’ She’s between having graduated and taken the bar and she’s interviewing at various law firms in New York.”
And while this might make it seem that Thomas is heavily invested in every nook and cranny of the show, he approached the whole thing by keeping an open mind. “I want to avoid getting deep into the ‘Veronica Mars’ mythology,” he said. “We’re not going to get into Veronica’s backlog of cases. I want to make the movie accessible for people who haven’t watched ‘Veronica Mars’ before. All you need to know is that Veronica was a teenage private eye and she’s given it up. And there will be a moment early in the movie that will bring her back to Neptune and make her give being a private detective one more shot.”
So, what else can we expect? Well, Thomas was quite chatty are revealed a few little pieces of info.
-Veronica “is dating someone,” but sorry folks, it’s not Logan (Jason Dohring)
-Backup, Veronica’s faithful dog, has passed away
–Amanda Seyfried‘s Lilly won’t be featured either (it was a longshot anyway considering she’s dead), but Veronica’s father Keith (Enrico Colantoni) will have decent-sized role
-Thomas is aiming for a PG-13 rating
