If you’re a hardcore fanboy, you probably wondered why in the hell director Matthew Vaughn left the “X-Men” series (he directed ‘First Class’) to go and make a spy action comedy film? Well, the reason is $400 million dollars. Yes, that’s how much Vaughn’s surprise hit “Kingsman: The Secret Service” has grossed worldwide. That’s a pretty solid number for an R-rated comedic spy actioner with a relatively modest budget of only $81 million. Sure, the movie only grossed $126 million domestically, but the international market is where it’s at anyhow.
The Wrap reports that 20th Century Fox is going ahead with a sequel and putting it into development. There’s no word on a writer yet, and there’s no release date thankfully, but it is a thing that will eventually happen. No word on whether Matthew Vaughn will return to the director’s chair as he’s now developing a “Flash Gordon” movie at Fox, but he could easily produce it, oversee it, and hand it over to another filmmaker.

It’s also unclear if the cast of Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Sophie Cookson, and Mark Hamill signed up for multiple sequels, but this day and age, that option is probably de rigueur. There’s also the ahem… the question of certain characters who didn’t survive the first film coming back, but we won’t delve into spoiler territory.
"Poor Mark Strong will be going on a journey that he never imagined. And we’ve got this idea to introduce the world to the American branch of the Kingsman." Vaughn teased earlier this year. "All of [the Kingsmen] will be doing stuff… And the villain we’ve come up with… We’ve got a really fun idea for the sequel." So an idea is in place, now all they have to do is write it and shoot. You’ve been warned.
