Library cards are great if you’re a book reader. But you’re not here to talk about the latest and greatest in literature. And don’t worry, we’re not telling you to skip the latest film for a book, either. That’s just crazy talk. No, we’re saying that thanks to Kanopy, that library card of yours is the gateway to one of the best modern film collections around.
Recently, we were saddened by the news of FilmStruck shutting down later this month. Unfortunately, with the service going away, there’s a massive void left in the film fan’s heart for indie and awards-nominated works. And since The Criterion Channel isn’t going to be around until Spring 2019, you might be looking for a new place to stream some of the best films around. Kanopy has you covered, thanks to a deal with indie studio A24.
For those not aware of Kanopy and what it offers, the streaming service is where you can find some of the best foreign, indie, and arthouse films. However, what separates Kanopy from other streamers like Netflix and Hulu is that it’s completely free of charge. That is, if you have a library card.
And now, Kanopy is looking to attract many more viewers with its ever-growing catalog of films from A24. The studio behind many of the best films each and every year has struck a deal with Kanopy when allows for 72 films from A24’s catalog to stream free on the service.
“Moonlight,” “Lady Bird,” “The Florida Project,” “First Reformed,” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” are just several of the titles available to stream for free. We can’t stress this enough — the service is free.

So, as we enter the dark time between FilmStruck’s closure and the birth of The Criterion Channel, let’s make sure to utilize some of the services that are attempting to fill the void. And since Kanopy only requires a library card, there might not be a better streaming alternative out there.
