Coming off the success of “Zola” and “The Green Knight,” A24 has officially set theatrical release dates in late 2021 for two upcoming dramas and awards contenders, Mike Mills‘ “C’mon C’mon” and Sean Baker‘s “Red Rocket.”
Deadline has revealed that “C’mon C’mon,” starring Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix, will be released on November 19, while Baker’s next pic, “Red Rocket,” will hit theaters on December 3. “C’mon C’mon” recently had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and will also appear at the New York Film Festival next week. “Red Rocket” debuted in Cannes earlier this summer and will also screen at NYFF.
Known for “20th Century Women,” “Beginners,” and “Thumbsucker,” Mills’ “C’mon C’mon” follows Johnny (Phoenix) and his young nephew (played by Woody Norman) as the pair forge a tenuous but transformational relationship when they are unexpectedly thrown together in this delicate and deeply moving story about the connections between adults and children, the past and the future. The film earned big raves at Telluride, including our glowing review.

It’ll be interesting to see if Phoenix will be able to muster up some awards consideration; the performance definitely sounds more than worthy.

Baker was previously behind “The Florida Project” that landed Willem Dafoe an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a major standout performance. His new film, “Red Rocket,” focuses on washed-up porn actor Mikey Saber (played by Simon Rex), that returns to his small Texas hometown, and conflict ensues.
Other upcoming A24 projects coming to screens later this year include Noomi Rapace’s “Lamb” on October 8, “The Souvenir Part II” on October 29, “The Humans” on November 24, and Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” on December 25 (a co-release with AppleTV+). Colin Farrell’s “After Yang” still needs to be dated, and at this point, one presumes they’ll wait for a 2022 theatrical bow.
