Earlier this spring, it was reported that Bette Midler and Brit pop sensation Pixie Lott were joining the ’70s set religious comedy “Sweet Baby Jesus” along with Sam Rockwell and Kim Catrall. Well, it looks like those latter two names have been swapped out.
Adrien Brody and Sharon Stone are the respective replacements in the film about Joe (Brody), “a guy who finds himself accompanying his pregnant teenage girlfriend to Bethlehem, Maryland. His girlfriend’s name is Mary (Lott) and soon the town is agog that it’s about to witness the Second Coming.” Midler is set to play the “innkeeper” Eleanor in the reconstructed Jesus comedy, while Stone will play Mary’s mother Darlene. Sean Brosnan has also been cast in the film (he’s been attached since 2008 when Alison Pill was set to star), though his role is yet to be revealed.
The high concept comedy is set to be directed by Peter Hewitt (“Garfield,” “Thunderpants”) so we’re not exactly optimistic about the prospect of this one. Production is slated to begin in September.
