Who says that snooty cinephile types don’t appreciate blockbusters? Okay, while the fine folks at the American Film Institute aren’t pretentious, they know a good movie when it lands in front of them, and when it came to selecting the finest achievement at the movies this year, big budgets didn’t keep anyone from making the list.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "The Martian," and "Mad Max: Fury Road" are the notable multiplex entries that made the top ten. Hip hop biopic "Straight Outta Compton" also arrived on the list, as did Pixar‘s "Inside Out." But smaller movies edged their way in as well, including "Carol," "Room," and "Spotlight."
On the TV side, the big names you expect are there (with "Mad Men" earning a Special Award), with room for newcomers like "Master Of None" and "Mr. Robot." Check out the full lists below.
