Air Scoring Norwegian Thriller 'Pioneer,' Mychael Danna Tuning Up 'Queen Of The Night' & Claire Denis' 'Bastards' Gets Soundtrack Release

Queen Of The Night Ryan Reynolds

Mychael Danna, who has scored all of Canadian director Atom Egoyan‘s features for the last twenty years (including the as-yet-unreleased “Devil’s Knot,” starring Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon), will, unsurprisingly, contribute music to Egoyan’s new film, “Queen of the Night.” The thriller, starring Ryan Reynolds (mercifully away from any kind of comic book adaptation), Bruce GreenwoodScott Speedman and Rosario Dawson, is about the search for a missing child and, like every other movie in the known universe, will be premiering at this fall’s Toronto International Film Festival. Read on for more about new scores from Air and soundtrack details for Claire Denis‘ controversial “Bastards” (all thanks to Film Music Reporter).

First off, French electronic music duo Air, who previously scored Sofia Coppola‘s debut feature “The Virgin Suicides” and most recently scored the totally amazing Roger Corman documentary “Corman’s World,” will provide the music for “Pioneer.” The movie, a Norwegian historical thriller by Erik Skjoldjaerg (who directed the original “Insomnia” and, less happily, “Prozac Nation“), sounds awesome: set in the early eighties, it details the potentially unjust dealings that paved the way for the Norwegian oil industry, which we all remember as being part of the Norway ride at EPCOT Center. The movie costars Aksel Hennie, Wes Bentley and Stephen Lang, and looks kind of like “Chinatown” but underwater. And Norwegian. Air will be a perfect fit.

Magnolia has acquired the domestic distribution rights for “Pioneer,” but hasn’t set a release date yet. It will make its international premiere at (you guessed it) the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Also, soundtrack details have emerged for the divisive Claire Denis Cannes movie “The Bastards” (you can read our thoughts here). The soundtrack features British rock band (and frequent Denis collaborators) Tindersticks, and will be out digitally on August 3rd. The follow-up to Denis’ wonderful “White Material,” starring Vincent Lindon, Chiara Mastroianni, Julie Bataille, and Michel Subor, opens in France on August 7th but is, as of this writing, without a domestic distributor. Here’s the track list and a little sampler.
