What happens when Steven Spielberg wants to make a movie out of your book? The rest of Hollywood comes calling for the rest of your works, and that's certainly true for Daniel H. Wilson. With Spielbergo shooting his "Robopocalypse" next year, the writer is seeing another one of his near-future, sci-fi stories moving ahead, with another director known for spectacle at the helm.
Alex Proyas ("Dark City," "Knowing") will get behind the camera for "Amped." And just like the Spielberg flick, it deals with advanced technology that runs amok, and the consquences that will have to be faced. It also sounds like "X-Men" but with nanotechnology. Here's the official synopsis from Amazon:
In Amped, people are implanted with a device that makes them capable of superhuman feats. The powerful technology has profound consequences for society, and soon a set of laws is passed that restricts the abilities—and rights—of "amplified" humans. On the day that the Supreme Court passes the first of these laws, twenty-nine-year-old Owen Gray joins the ranks of a new persecuted underclass known as "amps." Owen is forced to go on the run, desperate to reach an outpost in Oklahoma where, it is rumored, a group of the most enhanced amps may be about to change the world—or destroy it.
See what we mean about that? Everything from the young kids with abilities on the run to the secluded home with folks who share their gifts seems remarkably…familiar. But it's also easy to see why this one is moving ahead. Summit originally had the rights, but they've since gone over to Working Title who will be developing this. But as for when, where and with whom this will actually roll, you might not want to hold your breath… Proyas is busy, recently lining up the TV series "Evolve" over at ABC that will find him directing the pilot and producing. He's also attached to a shitload of movies all in various stages of development, so who knows which will roll first. [THR]
