Alexandre Aja Will Take A Bite Out Of The Vampire Tale 'Undying Love'

Two years ago, we'd have likely reported on Alexandre Aja's latest project with a total lack of enthusiasm. This was the director who bought us the remake of "The Hills Have Eyes," "P2," and "Mirrors." And considering we weren't even that impressed by his calling card, "Switchblade Romance," it's probably fair to say that we weren't his biggest fans. But then he went and made "Piranha 3D," and we were genuinely sad to see that he wasn't directing the sequel. This was a film that featured Jerry O'Connell's penis being chewed up and spat out by an angry piranha, yet almost had the sense of being the work of an auteur – what's not to like?

Aja's next film in theatres will be a remake of "Maniac" with Elijah Wood in the lead role — and, interestingly, the film is said to be entirely filmed from his POV — but we were unsure as to what his next step after would be. Aja had been linked to a remake of "Pet Semetary," an adaptation of Joe Hill (aka Stephen King Jr)'s "Horns," and let's not forget the crazy looking "Cobra: The Space Pirate." However, Deadline reports that Aja is now in negotiations to direct "Undying Love," and it may just arrive before (or at the expense of) those other projects.

"Undying Love" is a Warner Bros comic-book adaptation which centers around an ex-soldier who falls in love with a vampire, but in order to be with her he must take on her creator, who is protected by an army of monsters in the Hong Kong underworld. Yes, that's right – more vampires, more tortured souls, more of the same. As much as we try, we're failing to muster any excitement for this based on the concept, and we'd much rather see Aja tackle any of those other projects before this. From what we can see it sounds like "Push" meets "Twilight" meets "Max Payne" – good lord.
