Last week came the news that Alexandre Desplat, originally selected to score “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” had been replaced by Michael Giacchino following the film’s extensive reshoots. So what will Desplat do with all that sci-fi space blockbuster music he had on the brain? Well, looks like he’ll bring it over to another movie.

Luc Besson has announced that Desplat will score his upcoming “Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets.” Led by Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevigne, the story follows a team of special government operatives, who are tasked with investigating the vast space metropolis of Alpha, where not everything is as it seems. Presumably, colorful Besson-esque adventures ensue.
Desplat’s hire marks a break from Besson using his frequent composer collaborator Eric Serra, who scored “Leon: The Professional,” “The Fifth Element,” “Lucy,” “Nikita,” “The Lady,” and more. It marks an interesting creative split, but sometimes change can be a good thing, and it’s not like Besson and Serra still aren’t pals; Serra is still scoring the upcoming Besson co-written and produced thriller “The Lake.”
As for ‘Valerian,’ it opens on July 21, 2017 and we can’t wait to hear what Desplat puts together for Besson’s return to sci-fi.
