Even though he bowed out of scoring “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Alexandre Desplat hasn’t been wanting for work. The composer quickly replaced that project with another sci-fi epic, Luc Besson‘s “Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets,” and before the year is out, he’s added another exciting movie to his plate.

Desplat will tune up Guillermo del Toro‘s forthcoming “The Shape Of Water.” Starring Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Octavia Spencer, plot details have kept wrapped up tight about the other-worldly story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. While it’s the first time Desplat has scored a del Toro directed movie, he has (sort of) worked with him before. The composer provided the music for the del Toro produced animated movie “Rise Of The Guardians,” and is scoring some of the del Toro penned and produced animated series “Trollhunters.” So it seems their relationship is going to the next level.
No word yet on a release date for “The Shape Of Water,” but it’s expected to arrive in 2017.
