The always influential Directors Guild Awards were handed out Saturday night and they bestowed their top prize to Alfonso Cuaron for “Roma.” This confirms the prevailing theory that the Netflix release and last weekend’s PGA Award winner, “Green Book,” are the front-runners to win Best Picture. “Black Panther,” which won the SAG Ensemble, and “The Favourite” which could snatch BAFTA are also still in the race.
In other categories, “Eighth Grade’s” Bo Burnham was a somewhat surprising winner in the First Feature category. The indie darling beat “A Star is Born’s” Bradley Cooper and “Sorry To Bother You’s” Boots Riley.

On the television side Bill Hader (“Barry”), Ben Stiller (“Escape From Dannemora”) all earned their first DGA wins. Spike Jonze also won his first DGA honor in the commercial category. Adam McKay won for Drama Series for the pilot for “Succession.”
Here is a list of this year’s nominees, their directing teams and the winners in each category.
