The ‘Alien’ franchise seems to be polarizing amongst film fans. You have those who believe that the series never was able to succeed after James Cameron’s “Aliens.” Those people tend to also despise Ridley Scott’s two most recent ‘Alien’ films, “Prometheus” and ‘Covenant.’ Then you have those fans that enjoy the series as a whole and have come to accept the director’s crazy vision for the ‘Alien’ prequels.
So, depending on how you feel about the current state of ‘Alien’ will probably go a long way in deciding what you make of the recent news that a script for a ‘Covenant’ sequel exists, but it’s unclear if it’ll ever get made.

According to Empire Magazine (via HN Entertainment), writer John Logan, who penned ‘Covenant,’ completed work on a sequel to that film, tentatively titled “Alien: Awakening.” And not surprisingly, it would have picked up exactly where ‘Covenant’ left off, focusing once again on Michael Fassbender’s controversial character, David.
The report says, “Logan’s script would have seen the return of ‘Prometheus’’ Engineers, with that species’ survivors coming after the genocidal David. Setting-wise, Scott said it was obvious ‘we’re gonna actually go to the planet.’ By which we assume he means LV-426.”
That last bit of the quote references an earlier interview on the heels of “Alien: Covenant,” where Scott talked about the potential sequel taking place on LV-426. He also seems to confirm that the sequel would have found the Engineers who “arrive back and find their planet decimated.”

Obviously, there are multiple factors at play when talking about a potential sequel to ‘Covenant.’ First, and foremost, there’s the issue of “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” not being the biggest box office hits for Fox. Then there’s the additional wrinkle of Ridley Scott’s involvement in the franchise, as he seems to be the man who ultimately decides when these films get made. But let’s also mention that with the upcoming Disney/Fox merger, the idea of the Mouse House potentially letting Scott have another shot at the ‘Alien’ franchise seems slim, unless it’s a full-on reboot.
As it stands, ‘Awakening’ follows in the footsteps of Neill Blomkamp’s aborted ‘Alien 5’ as films in the franchise that will probably never see the light of day.
